Dear Camera Researcher,

I just did a lot of research on the   Panasonic SDR-S150 camera  I have not laid my hands on one yet because no one in Houston, TX  has it in stock.  So I put my research here. http://www.IdeaPhotos.com/Panasonic/SDR-S150.html    Once I get the camera I  will post my  camera reviews on this site.  The YouTube.com Video at the top of this page was NOT  made with this camera because I don't have it yet. .  It was made with my 3 year old Digital Camera that make Mini-Movies on a 156 meg mini cd s a Sony CD-400. It is a fantastic camera. I may make a website  about that.

I paid Amazon $ 727.94 0n 4-26-07 for the  Panasonic SDR-S150. I used the free shipping. I have no idea how long it will take the boat to get here.

I was quite impressed with the reviews listed below. I had to gather a lot of information from many websites so I thought I would share my findings with you keeping the info all together. If you have one of these cameras please send me your personal review of the camera. I will post your opinion here. You can help others when they have to part with a lot of their hard earned money.

I am looking for a owners manual on line for this camera so I can put it on this site.  If you know where there is one please email it to me. Click: E-mail me    After I placed my order I found some additional information on the camera. I have posted that data here. Let me know if this is helpful to you to find all the information on one page.  I have 294 interesting and informative  websites on many subjects.

5-15-07  Amazon gave me a $ 30 credit on this because they were late in sending it.  I received the camera  on May 11, 2007.  So far I really like it. The remote control works in camera and play back mode. In addition to the 10 optical zoom  It does have a digital zoom  fixed up to 25 or fixed up to 700.

I just purchased 3  batteries for it from  Sarah at  battery_source@yahoo.com.

I bought a backup 2 GB disk SD disk from Amazon. I found it in bulk where the price was $ 12.99. It arrived fine.  I tried to buy several  and  combine shipping $7.99 since they only weigh a few grams, but they wouldn't let me  do that at a lower price.

Amazon also gave me another $ 30 for applying for their credit card with no fees that I know of.  Will post more pictures and results about the camera later. A software disk comes with it but I am still learning to use it.  Call me if you have any questions or tips. . Brian Nelson  713-467-3025.

7-25-07 I am unhappy.  I am having a big problem with the sd chip in this camera. Previously when I deleted all the data it would not record. It said that chip was full.  The only way to empty chip data was to format it.  I lost 2 video takes.

Today I had a Panasonic 2 GB sd chip  in the camera where all previous videos and stills were deleted. The camera said NO DATA. I took three  3 minute videos within a 15 minute period never shutting the camera off. Transferring the data to my  computer  it showed   2 folders PRG001 and PRG002. PRG001 had 4 videos that i had already deleted and uploaded to YouTube. Sizes were 86,108KB,  89,092kb, 24,400 kb and 79,494 kb.

PRG002 had a movie  53856 kb, 57702kb and my video from today 63,200 kb. When I uploaded.  the 63200 it started out  with the right person but in 30 seconds it switched to one of the other videos. http://youtube.com/watch?v=6bFwAedRTSc I think i will save this and put it on this message on the web. Maybe someone can help me determine if it is the  chip or the camera.

Should I send this camera back. Is it the sd chip?   Do you have to format each time you off load to your computer. Call or email me.Brian Nelson 713-467-3025 Click: E-mail me

1 6-25-07  I have had this camera for about a month now.  Below are my comments about this camera  about things I have learned that you as a user or  potential may want to know.
2 You  can not use this camera as a webcam for www.YouTube.com  It can be used for a webcam only for Windows XP Messenger and Windows XP MSN Messenger and Windows 2000 MSN Messenger.  IE ONLY MICROSOFT PRODUCTS.
3 I have experienced problems transferring the SD Chip data. There are times when the data totally disappeared.  Yesterday the  2GB chip said while in the camera that there was no data.  I used the camera for a 5 minute  video. It stopped recording with an error message coming up stating that there was no disk space available. I put it in my computer right clicking properties viewing the disk while on the my computer page. It show the disk was 1.89 GB full.  I put it in camera and formatted the chip under the menu setup. I put it back in the computer and now the chip was empty.  It worked fine.
4 There are some risks in data loss while removing the disk. In the camera it is easy to turn off the camera. When You remove it from the computer it has been difficult to know when it is safe. I have closed  the photos  windows or computer  windows but somehow I think I still am losing data. Once the data is on my computer I delete the scene from the chip in the camera. There are times I wish I hadn't but if you don't you end up with copying the data many times on your computer. >
5 I like the finger knob to stabilize holding the camera. It screws into the tripod  mount. It conveniently ties to the camera strap when removed for a tripod use.
6 The flash will only go off when you push the open  flash button on top of the camera.
7 I like the super swivel features of the LCD screen.
8 I like using the remote control for the camera. You can turn it on, off, zoom, stop, telephoto, wide angle, menu, date time, delete, etc.
9 Panasonic Support  1-800-272-7033
10 The wrist strap is handy. I should be used as often as possible to prevent dropping the camera.
11 You can not remove the SD chip when the tripod mount is on the camera.
12  Upper right light will flash while charging. It will stop flashing when it is charge.
13 The scene mode will only work with the auto button moved to manual.
14 In the LP  video mode you can shoot up to 5 minutes keeping the megs under 100 to qualify for www.YouTube.com
15 It does have 3  telephoto options.  Normal is 10 optical. Then under 25 you really get a long way. You also can go to 700 zoom only if you have a tripod. You can go several miles away. Wow. It gets shaky if you don't have a tripod.
16 The menu for still camera will change when moved to movie camera.
17 The wind noise reduction only works in movie mode.
18 Manual focus works best with a tripod.
19 The shutter operation effect gives you a click sound when the picture is taken. There are times when you want this and other times you don't want any noise. I did notice that with the shutter effect off the focusing beep still sounds.
20 When the silver button is partly pushed in the camera will focus and beep when the focus is right for taking the picture. I like this feature.
21 This camera does not have an external mic port.
22 The speaker volume is adjusted by the wide angel and telephoto button.
23 I have often pressed the cursor button thinking I was taking a picture. It won't do it.  Be sure your finger is on the top button.
24 The menu button is used to turn on the menu and also to turn off the menu so you can go to either the advanced or the basic menus  or to the set up menu.
25 A scene is one picture or one videotaping session.
26 Side Note. All of a sudden I could not play a DVD which I had been working on. My Gateway 710XL could not read a cd or dvd. Gateways testing in safe mode showed the the cdr and dvd player were working.  Must be a software problem. Recent software was Roxio DVD CD Creator. We removed it under add and remove programs and now the DVD is working again. That is sick bad news that some new software can cause other programs to not work.  There should be a law against that.

Panasonic SDR-S150 SD Card Camcorder

With the SDR-S150 SD Card Camcorder, Panasonic delivers a camcorder that offers impressive image quality and performance in a package that is compact, convenient, and extremely easy to use. Following in the footsteps of the popular SDR-S100, the SDR-S150 is compact, lightweight and features the high-quality 3CCD camera system and MPEG2 recording. The SDR-S150 improves on its predecessor by accepting the new 4GB SDHC Memory Card, a next-generation media that allows recording for up to 3 hours and 20 minutes in LP mode.

The SDR-S150 packs a wealth of Panasonic's top image-enhancing technologies into a conveniently small, easy-to-handle body. The 3CCD camera system provides superb color reproduction. The Optical Image Stabilizer helps deliver crisp, clear images without degradation for shooting either moving pictures or still shots. The Leica Dicomar lens and high-performance Advanced Pure Color Engine image processor assure beautiful image rendering. Also adding advanced MPEG2 technology, Panasonic has equipped the S150 to deliver truly outstanding pictures, even when shooting fast-moving subjects.

Taking advantage of the small, solid-state SD Memory Card, the S150 is tough as well as compact. Because there's no mechanism in the recording section, the S150 provides excellent resistance to impact and stable, virtually error-free recording. It also offers outstanding convenience after shooting. Using a PC equipped with an SD Memory Card slot, for example, it is possible to perform non-linear editing without connecting any cables. The SDR-S150 comes with a 2GB SD Memory Card.

Supplied Accessories:
  • AC Adaptor
  • Lithium Ion Battery Pack
  • IR Remote Control
  • 2GB SD Memory Card
  • Hand Strap
  • Attachable Grip
  • Headphone Cable
  • AV Cable
  • USB Cable
  • Software CD-ROM: MotionSD STUDIO 1.1E

Panasonic SDR-S150 SD Card Camcorder

SD / SDHC Memory Card Recoring Media
Taking advantage of the small, solid-state SD Memory Card, the S150 is tough as well as compact. Because there's no mechanism in the recording section, the S150 provides excellent resistance to impact and stable, virtually error-free recording. It also offers outstanding convenience after shooting. Using a PC equipped with an SD Memory Card slot, for example, it is possible to perform non-linear editing without connecting any cables.

For extended high-quality recording, the SDR-S150 also accepts the new 4GB SDHC (SD High-Capacity) Memory Card, which conforms to SD Specifications Version 2.00. With the 4GB card, it can record up to around 50 minutes of moving images in high-quality XP mode or 3 hours and 20 minutes in LP mode. Because the SDHC standard guarantees the minimum data speed performance, it guarantees stable, consecutive recording of moving images and other types of large-volume data.

3CCD Camera System (3 x 800k Pixels)
The SDR-S150 features a 3CCD camera system - the type used in most professional broadcast equipment. Since being selected as official broadcasting equipment for the Olympic Games in 1992, Panasonic's 3CCD camcorders have brought breathtaking images to the homes of viewers all around the world. For the compact S150, Panasonic has downsized its professional 3CCD camera system to about 1/16 the original size in terms of surface area. In a 3CCD camera system, the light is split into its three primary color components (red, green and blue), and the resulting signal from each is collected by one of the three CCDs. Compared with conventional 1CCD camera systems, Panasonic's advanced 3CCD system gives you greater beauty three different ways: in color, detail, and gradation.

Panasonic SDR-S150 Camcorder Leica Dicomar Lens

Leica Dicomar Lens
Leica Camera AG is renowned by photographers worldwide as a maker of superb cameras and lenses. Now this legendary optical technology fuses with Panasonic's advanced digital technology in the Leica Dicomar Lens. The SDR-S150's brilliant new lens features 12 lens elements in 8 groups and uses low-dispersion optical glass to reduce chromatic aberration. A special multi-coating process is applied to 14 lens surfaces, minimizing harmful reflections to deliver crisp, clear images free of flare and ghosting.
Optical Image Stabilizer
Panasonic's O.I.S. minimizes the shakiness that can be such a problem with handheld shots. The Optical Image Stabilizer helps you obtain clear, beautiful pictures by compensating for any hand movement that occurs as you shoot video. Gyrosensors detect the amount and direction of movement, while a linear motor adjusts the lenses as needed to compensate. You get clear, sharp images in situations where hand-shake is typically a problem, like wide-angle shots or high magnification levels of the zoom. Because the system is optical, there is no image quality degradation. When shooting a still image, the MEGA O.I.S. system automatically doubles the corrective power. With O.I.S. and MEGA O.I.S., the S150 is equipped for clear, beautiful shooting of both moving pictures and still images.
10x Hi-Definition Zoom/700x Digital Zoom
The Panasonic SDR-S150 camcorder comes with a lens capable of a 10:1 optical zoom. This powerful feature acts like a telescope to produce close-up shots with extraordinary clarity, so you won't miss a single detail. It also offers variable zoom speeds, so you can zoom in for close-ups, or zoom out for wide angle shots, using any of seven different zoom speeds.

Through the use of digital technology, the zoom ratio can be increased to 700:1*, producing an incredibly close shot.

Panasonic SDR-S150 Camcorder Leica Dicomar Lens

2.8" Diagonal Widescreen Power LCD Monitor
The SDR-S150 features a wide 2.8-inch LCD, making it easier to frame shots when you're shooting in 16:9 mode. You can enjoy shooting wide, and viewing wide. Simply press the Power LCD button and the LCD becomes brighter, making it easier to see outdoors or in other bright locations.
Quad-Density Pixel Distribution Technology
Quad-Density Pixel Distribution Technology makes it possible to capture still pictures with amazing megapixel quality. The tiny 2.5-micron intervals between pixels are shifted by one-half pitch both vertically and horizontally, which distributes them on the CCD with four times the density of previous systems. It enables model SDR-S150 to capture still pictures with incredible detail at up to 3.1 Megapixels.
3.1 Megapixel Still Picture Recording
This feature combines three CCDs, each with 800k pixels, with Panasonic Quad-Density Pixel Distribution Technology to deliver true 3.1 megapixel still images -- 2048 x 1512 -- when recording to SD memory card.

* As digital magnification increases, resolution significantly decreases.

Advanced Pure Color Engine
The Advanced Pure Color Engine found on the SDR-S150 is a special image processing circuit for 3CCD camera systems. It processes the R, G and B signals from the three CCDs individually, so it gives both motion and still pictures exceptional quality.

Panasonic SDR-S150 Camcorder Leica Dicomar Lens

Panasonic MPEG2 Engine
The Panasonic MPEG2 engine is a wide-range, high-precision search engine that produces smooth, beautiful moving pictures. Because it records the differences in each frame, it can render fast, complex motions -- like those of children in the thick of the action -- with exceptional precision. The MPEG2 engine also uses the Variable Bit Rate system that Panasonic adopted for their high-end DIGA DVD recorder. LP (Long Play) mode now offers nearly twice the resolution of previous MPEG2 recording video cameras, giving you the best possible resolution at the longest recording times.
Tele Macro Function
Using the zoom at full magnification, you can shoot macro close-ups while maintaining a distance of about 24" from your subject. This makes it much easier to caputre extreme close-ups without your body or the camcorder casting a shadow on the subject, and while keeping the background in soft focus.
USB 2.0 High Speed Connection
This convenient feature allows you to link the camcorder to your computer via the USB port. Then, you can easily transfer captured still images to your computer for use in e-mail or printed documents. The SDR-S150 supports USB 2.0 High Speed enabling real time video transfers.

Panasonic SDR-S150 Camcorder Leica Dicomar Lens

PictBridge Direct Print Compatibility
The PictBridge standard lets you print directly on a compatible digital printer. Print size, layout, date and other settings can be made with the camera.
MagicPix™ Images
This feature is a great way to record still images even in low-light settings. Now you can capture still images in full color onto the MiniDV tape and save priceless memories like a sleeping baby or a moonlit vacation night.
High-Speed Shutter
1/60 - 1/8000 (Motion Picture), 1/30 - 1/2000 (Still Picture)

Product Description
Amazon.com Amazon.com Product Description
As the follow-up to the SDR-S100, the Panasonic SDR-S150 builds on the success of its predecessor. Not only can you record MPEG2 video straight to an SD card (2GB card included), but the 3CCD image sensor and optical image stabilization work to ensure that your images look their best. The S150 also uses Panasonic's proprietary Quad-Density Pixel Distribution technology to convert the image signal. Providing four times the pixel density when recording still pictures, this lets the S150 capture 3.1-megapixel (2048 x 1512) still pictures. Plus, 1.5-second quick start and a wide, 2.8-inch LCD monitor make it easy to operate.

SDR-S150 Highlights
Leica Dicomar lens
The Leica Dicomar lens was developed jointly by world renowned Leica Camera AG and Panasonic to clear stringent quality standards as an ideal lens system for digital video cameras.

Multi-coated lenses
The multicoated lens is able to suppress diffused reflection. The S150's lens system has 12 elements in 8 groups, with 14 multicoated surfaces.

Low-dispersion glasses
It minimizes chromatic aberration caused by focal deviations in the light after it enters the lens. This suppresses both colour bleeding and false colour.

O.I.S (Optical Image Stabilizer)

The O.I.S. (Optical Image Stabilizer) cancels the hand-shake effect by stabilizing the image that reaches the CCD. Unlike the electrical stabilization system, the optical stabilization system accompanies almost no deterioration and unnatural touchup, This also works for the still picture as MEGA O.I.S. and assure sharp, clear motion pictures and still pictures.
3CCD camera system

The 3CCD camera system is used in most professional broadcast equipment. Each of the three primary colours is processed just the way it is. That means there is almost no light loss and the colour information is accurate.

Panasonic Original Engine (Crystal Engine plus MPEG2 Engine)

The Crystal Engine renders highly precise, life-like colours by processing each of the R, G and B signals from the three CCDS, while new noise shaping filters further improve processing precision. And the new Panasonic MPEG2 Engine achieves a level of recording quality in LP mode that approaches SP mode.

Crystal Engine
The three primary colours that are separated by the 3CCD system are processed individually. Noise is then optimally removed to produce images as beautiful as they appear in nature.

MPEG2 Engine
Panasonic has developed its own new MPEG2 Engine with Wide-Range Motion Search Tecnology and Variable Bit Rate System. It renders fast-moving subjects with outstanding precision. It also reproduces MPEG2 images in LP mode with the same level of resolution as images in SP mode.

With the SD/SDHC memory card, shooting video is easier and more convenient

Compact size, super-fast startup
The SD/SDHC Memory Card is just 24 x 32 x 2.1 mm (W x H x T) and weighs only 2 g (approx.). Startup time is very short too, so you can record on a moment's notice.

Use it almost anywhere
The tough little SD/SDHC Memory Card is highly resistant to heat, light, impact and dew condensation, so you can take it just about anywhere and use it in a wide range of conditions.

Quick, easy uploading to a PC

Product Description
The SDR-S150, with its 3CCD Camera System, reproduces color in great fidelity by using a separate CCD for reds, greens and blues. It's the same 3CCD technology used in Panasonic professional broadcast equipment, resulting in 540 lines of breathtaking resolution. You can count on Panasonic 3CCD Digital Camcorders to give you colors that are as rich and vibrant as your life. World-renowned lens-maker LEICA has developed an exquisite, 12-element, multi-coated lens that helps add a high-level of detail and subtlety to your creations. With refinements like a 2-stage neutral density filter for aperture independent adjustment, you'll appreciate the remarkably crisp, true-to-life color that is a hallmark of Leica Dicomar optics.
What does all this mean? You can use this camcorder for recording great video and still images. Using an SD memory card (2GB included) with optional cards available to 4GB, the SDR-S150 is incredibly tiny; easy to carry and use. It's only (H x W x D) 3.81'' x 1.1'' x 0.62'' - nearly pocket sized! Optical Image Stabilization virtually eliminates normal handshake resulting in sharper videos when camera is handheld Includes rechargeable battery, AC charger, 2GB SD card, USB cable (for PC or Macintosh transfer), A/V cable (for viewing images on TV or recording to VCR or DVD recorder), IR Remote Control Accepts 37mm filter accessories Unit Dimensions (H x W x D) 3.81'' x 1.1'' x 0.62'' / Weight 3.88 lbs

Compression (7.0)
The Panasonic SDR-S150 records video using MPEG-2 video compression, but what sets this camcorder apart from the masses is its SD memory card recording format. Far more than other camcorder manufacturers, Panasonic has invested heavily in developing memory card technology for camcorders. At the high end, their P2 cards are used in the high definition AG-HVX200 prosumer camcorder, but at present the SDR-S150 is the only SD card only camcorder on the market. The advantages of memory card recording are many, including silent running and a paucity of moving parts to break down or malfunction.

Like most MPEG-2-based camcorders, the SDR-S150 offers several quality options that relate to the level of video compression. SP mode (slow play) and LP mode (long play) are lower quality recording modes with higher levels of MPEG-2 compression. XP is the highest quality recording mode, and you’ll find that XP footage quickly fills up a card. The included 2GB card can only hold 25 minutes of XP footage while a new 4GB SDHC card holds 50 minutes of XP footage. SP mode extends the capacity of the 2GB card to to 50 minutes, and LP to 100 minutes.

Media (5.5)
A High Speed 2GB SD card ships with the SDR-S150, but Panasonic recently announced larger the release of larger 4GB SDHC memory cards, doubling the maximum recording time available. The SDR-S150 can record to any SD card with a Speed Class rating of 2 or higher. In terms of convenience and portability, it’s hard to beat SD cards. They are much smaller then MiniDV tapes or compact DVD’s, and they are relatively impervious to moisture, heat, dust, and other elemental factors. In addition, they allow the SDR-S150 to run virtually silently meaning much less camera whir on your soundtrack.

In still mode, the 2GB card can hold up to 1,280 photos and in Fine Mode at its highest resolution, 2048 x 1512. With all their advantages, we are happy to see one company forging ahead in the SD camcorder arena. At the same time, acquiring enough SD cards to pull off an extended shoot may be expensive, with street prices for 2GB cards ranging up from $25 after rebate to well over $50. You should expect Panasonic’s new 4GB cards to be significantly more expensive.

Editing (4.0)
SDR-S150 ships with MotionSD Studio, a basic editing system that is compatible with the MPEG-2 files created by this camcorder. When importing clips using a Windows-based computer, the file extension .MOV is not a valid file format for importing most non-linear editing programs such as Premier. We have found a simple solution to this problem, which is to manually change the .MOV extension to .MPG.

MotionSD is better than many editing programs that we have seen packaged with a camcorder. It is good at converting clips into MPEG4 for email and outputting clips directly onto a DVD. As an added bonus, if you like cheesy video effects and clip art animations, MotionSD has lots to offer. File transfer can be done via USB from the camcorder, or by simply inserting the SD card into a media slot.

Mac users will need to find an application that can convert the MPEG-2 files into a format compatible with your editor. MPEG Streamclip is an excellent shareware program that can convert a plethora of video files including .MOD into more usable formats. I used MPEG Streamclip to work with files from the SDR-S150 on my Powerbook.

SD150 price

Another interesting fact about S150. Pre-orders on major sites were showing $999 price. When it came out on September 11, the price seemed to drop to $900. On the day this article was published, it can be had for $779 on buydig.

I have had my SDR-S150 for two days now and I am more than happy with it. I read all of the available reviews, decided very nearly to abandon my quest (which was for a very small, light camcorder that I could fit in my pocket - so I'd never think to myself, "Nah, I'm not carrying that thing around all day.") and go for an HDR-HC3.

I'm glad I didn't. The video quality, to my admittedly untutored eye, is indeed superb. Even the low light performance was better than I expected. The tiny SD cards are so light, and if you you're going on vacation buy a (battery powered) Jobo Giga One 40GB HDD and slot your SD card into it when you get back to your hotel room in the evenings - transfer of my first 176MB of .MOD files took about a minute. Huge Sony HDD cam? Nah.

Give Mr Panasonic that cigar.

Mini DV camcorders uses an AVI codec that allows intra frame editing, it’s basically a whole lot easier to edit with because you’re dealing with individual frames. Also the picture quality in Mini DV is a lot better than an SD MPEG2 camcorder.

AVI v's MPEG2 v's MPEG4

I believe the comments by Camera Expert need qualification.
Re editing AVI v's MPEG. AVI does have advantages, but new software is closing the gap. If you don't plan on computer-based editing, then it is a non-issue.
Re quality. I can show you a mini DV camera (AVI) which generates significantly inferior results when compared to the SDR-100 MPEG-2 camera. The recording medium/method is only one part of the story. A DV camera with poor optics and/or poor sensor and/or poor electronics will always look poor up against a good MPEG camera. I suggest you look at actual video clips from the camera that interests you. It is quite possible that you cannot even SEE the reported "problems", in which case those "problems" also become non-issues.
Red rag raised. If however you are like the golden ear brigade, it is possible you can see problems which don't exist. Red rag lowered.

The DVD movies you buy/hire are all MPEG-2 encoded; most look very good to me. MPEG quality is dependant on the compression software and degree of compression. Both effect the data rate and storage requirements. A limitation with today's MPEG cameras is the compression engine; not so much that it is poor, but rather that better compression performance requires better computer processing power. We can't fit powerful processors in a camera and expect long battery life (well not yet anyway) so MPEG-camera image-quality is not as good as it theoretically could be.
MPEG-4 is a newer coding method which when compared to MPEG-2 and all else being equal, will achieve the same image quality with roughly half the file size or data rate. Comparing an MPEG-4 camera to an MPEG-2 camera is NOT a case of "all else being equal" when one is a Sanyo and the other a Panasonic; I have no idea how the two cameras compare.

Well, I do, because I spent six months researching them. The Xacti HD1 produces beautiful, oversaturated video that my P4 2.8 gHz laptop struggles to decode. It has poor image stabilisation: all of the good quality samples I have seen are made using a tripod.

The SDR-S150 produces beaautiful SD video that isn't oversaturated, is very natural looking, is easily as good as any consumer level camcorder footage that I have seen recently (and I have seen a lot) with the exception of the HDR-HC3 which, frankly, blows it away. It has OIS, which seems to do a good job, and the mpeg2 video can be decoded by an old shoebox I keep in the closet.

The sheer convenience of being able to slot an SD card into the laptop at the end of a shooting session and be able to manipulate the video without having to bother with tapes, not to mention the complete silence of the camcorder whilke actually shooting, well, it's like a breath of fresh air.

I realsie there will be a large section of the community that will continue to insist that mpeg2 compression will have a lower quality but in the real world, where most DV is burned to DVD anyway, is this still a valid argument?

August 21, 2006 - An MSRP of $999 has been announced by Panasonic for the SDR-S150 camcorder, the follow-up to the SD card-based SDR-S100. The SDR-S150 was originally announced in early June. No significant changes have been made since then. The camcorder ships with a 2GB SD card, and is compatible with 4GB SDHC cards.

Like it’s predecessor, the SDR-S150 features three-chip imager system. The imagers measure 1/6” each, with 800k gross pixels (540K effective pixels in 16:9, 640K effective pixels in 4:3; 540K effective pixels in 16:9 still mode, 710K effective pixels in 4:3 still mode.) The Leica Dicomar lens has a 10x optical zoom, with an focal range of 3.0mm – 30.0mm and F1.8 – 2.8. The 2.8” LCD monitor offers a relatively high resolution of 210K.

The SDR-S150 records video directly to SD card in the MPEG-2 format, with a maximum bit rate of 10Mbps. DVD camcorder, which also capture in the MPEG-2 format, have a current ceiling of 8.5Mbps, sometimes rounded up to 9Mbps. The included 2GB card will hold approximately 25 minutes of the highest quality video, and 100 minutes of the lowest. A 4GB SDHC card (also known as SD 2.0) will hold twice that data.

Other features of the SDR-S150 include a still flash, optical image stabilization, and MotionSD Studio editing software.

The Panasonic SDR-S150 ships in September for an MSRP of $999.95.
