2 years ago I bought from Wal-mart  a Great Outdoors Grill Company  outdoor grill. Model 6000W Serial  64370600023.
 
Search the at that time the product had the highest warranties in the industry.  75 years on the housing, 10 or 15 years on the burners and then I recall that there was even a 5 year warranty on the igniter. I was impressed. I told everyone about it. 
 
1 year after we had it it started falling apart. Of course the igniter is the first thing to go. They the grill shut down on one side.  Then the connection with the gas line started rusting.
 
The black paint on the aluminum housing started peeling off.  This thing is a mess. I can send you pictures. as many as you want by email. What do I do? My wife is about to hang me because I was the one who picked it out and surprised her with a new grill. Thanks for your response. Immediately after my purchase  at WalmartI wrote you that I did not get a manual with it. I think it was an already set up model.  L Rowe CSM  responded  12-5-02 by email  that he would  send a manual. I did receive and now have the manual. Packing list no. is  36202. I can send you a copy of the packing list and the letter from Row    Manual no. is 10001120402.  I am unable to locate the receipt after 3 years. I should have kept it with the manual. I could have paid cash or discover.

I request that you honor the extended warranty above based on the information provided  above. Sometimes you have to trust. Especially with a 25 year warranty on the burner and it fails within 24 months.  Something is wrong.  I look forward  to your immediate response. I have previously sent you the serial no. I can photograph the unit in many ways and email that to you.  Advise. Brian Nelson

12-28-05  Dear Journal,

Notes. I located a Discover payment Nov. 30, 2002 for  the Wal-Mart purchase. I faxed it  to Ali. They may have looked at these photos because they are sending me a complete new Grill.  I will let you know if I ever receive it.  Brian

I did receive a model 8000 Series  Grill via Roadway Express on 1-21-06. It is bigger than the original one. The well done  owners manual had many photos on how to put it together. I had to retrofit two pieces by unscrewing  some bolts they had installed so that  2 rigid non flexible  parts would  would fit. That was very tricky but it works fine and I appreciate the effort the company  made to rectify a defective product. The manufactures Limited Warranty guarantees  the cast-Aluminum parts for 75 years, the Cast-Brass Burner for  25 years prorated. All other parts are good for 5 years except paint. Repair costs are the responsibility of the consumer.  All warranty claims apply only to the original purchaser and require a proof of purchase verifying purchase date. I have had other people write me about their grill. . See below.

What a shame that you got such a lemon, I bought my Grill in 1998 or 1999 from Home Depot for $500 and at that time and for at least 3 years after that the Great Outdoor Grill Company still were the owners and it was the BEST customer service you could ever imagine.  I believe my customer service girl was named Lynn and she sent me new burners, infighters, grill tops, anything that went wrong next day no charge no hassle. 
This new company is the problem, they are ripping people off and stating you have to have your receipts.  My grill still looks new and runs great, a little low on the flame and the bottom rack is ragged out but I use it a great deal.  Hope your grilling gets better, but the old Great Outdoors was really Great that's what happens when big companies buy little successful companies.

Dear Brian,

Hello , Your pics look better than mine , no.......really they could have been taken by me . I contacted the people that now own Great Outdoor Grill , all I\'m asking is for replacement of the burner and the venturi tubes , figure I can spray some paint on the rest . Anyway What are my odds ?
I have more and I can retake if there is anything you don't like . My letter was a nice email only asking if my warranty was good and saying I needed the burner and venturi tubes . I owned a Vermont Castings wood stove and the quality was outstanding so I guess I'm thinking they will back up Great Outdoors. Found your site by searching Great Outdoors Grill Warranty. Let me know how bad you think mine is . Hey you can't see it , I'll have to take out the burner for it to show in pics , but the ends of the H burner are completely eating away on all 4 ends . The starter lasted 3 months maybe . My grill was purchased in fall of 2002 and started looking like this the first year , paint and so forth . Thanks .   John

Hey Brian, They have been very nice and helpful . I sent the pics to them and a fax of my receipt as they requested and they are replacing the grill , I'm waiting on it now . So that's the end of it for me . You may want to post that info on your site so others will know they are backing the warranty. Again please don't put my email address on the internet. I wonder how long the new one will last . Not 75 years I'm sure. I only paid $150 on sale , but the warranty and the appearance of being well constructed was the attraction. All is well that ends well. John

John,  I am glad that they are honoring their warranty.  I don't understand how they will be able to stay in business offering  a  75 year warranty.  Maybe the replacement ones are better quality and are indestructible. As others write I will post their comments. I was also impressed with the appearance of good construction.  I am 66  and never had a grill that lasted very long.     Brian

While I was looking for replacement parts for my dilapidated Gr. Outdoors Gas Gill, I stumbled on your site.  I also bought one of these grills 2 summers ago. I'm amazed and very reassured that your photos look just like mine.  I became so tired of buying Barbeque grills that I finally decided to go with the best warranty I could find.  Saw the grill at Wal-Mart and at Lowes, and found the better price at Wal-Mart, I think about $250.  I knew cast iron was the strongest metal against rusting, but I had no idea that our burner would disintegrate so quickly, the ignition, no biggie, I'm used to them not working.  But all of our paint is gone, not another biggie.  But now it\'s not workable. 
I'm having to search for my receipt too.  Usually staple them to the warranty book, but in this case, no such luck.  Will try your links to get in touch with them, their website is down, wonder if that is a problem now.  It\'s been quite a while since your problems with the grill.  But sure glad to see I'm not alone.  Thanks for the information, it\'s encouraging.

Dear Brian,

Brian,
I have had the same problem as your photos show.  The brass burner is fine but the venturi tubes are completely corroded through.  Even if I did get a new venturi tube and gasket from CFM, the gasket and screws holding the assembly on have fused to the burner making it impossible to replace without drilling out the screws and machining down the burner where the gasket attaches.  The company has offered to sell me a new venturi assembly and burner for $28.29 tax and shipping included.  This would be the second time they have replaced the burner because the venturi tubes have failed.  If I have to continually buy new parts every couple of years, I think I should just buy a different unit.  Any recommendations on a reliable grill?  I\'ve discovered a warranty is only as good as the company backing it up!

Also, I need more than the 290 sq in of primary cooking surface that this model offers. I have a wife mandated grill budget in the ~$500-600 range. I cook mostly steaks, burgers, brats, tuna, the occasional tenderloin, etc (mostly the usual suspects).

I understand that Weber makes a good grill, but you don't get much grill for the money until you get in the >$1000 range. That being said, I am considering a few grills that fit my budget and seem to be well made. I am looking to you, the BBQ Grill community to help me make this difficult choice. I don't expect this to be my last grill. As soon as we upgrade our house (3 to 5 years), I plan to build out a serious outdoor kitchen. Therefore, I would like this grill to perform well as my primary grill for the next 5 years and then as a backup/auxillary. I am in Atlanta, so salt air is not a concern, but humidity is a concern.

I have also looked at a smaller Vermont Castings at HD and the Coleman 5310 at Lowes. The VC seems to be a bit small and underpowered (36000BTU) and the Coleman has a lot of plastic in the construction and does not include a thermo.

Any feedback/experiences with any of the aforementioned grills would be greatly appreciated.

I would also like to hear your thoughts on stainless steel grates vs porcelain coated cast iron.

Finally, Lowes carries a brand I have never heard of - BBQ Grillware that appears to made in China. As a rule, I don't typically equate Chinese made products with high quality. However, these grills have an ignition system called "Individual Jet Ignition". I am curious to know if anyone has any idea what this is and how it works.

  2. Weber is definetly over priced! mainly due to its ad propaganda! when buying a weber you really need to think that is it really worth it? is it good just because some dude on tv says its good? WHY is it good? is it the same feature other producers offer but this is on tv? is warranty on stainless steel really THAT necessary? I had couple webers in my life and to be honest when that grease accumulates you just want a new grill! average speaking 3 years of usage of any grill sounds decent(alittle longer if you kept it clean).. so ask your self why buy a grill twice the price of others that are basically the same!? and chances are you will still buy another at around 3 years period.

  3. I bought a Great out doors grill about 3-4 years ago…cast brass burner (for the warranty), worked pretty good the 1st couple of years. Although the burner had a excellent warrenty the rest of the grill is showing its wear.
    & had to replace other componets. currently on my 2nd venturi tube, soon to be 3rd. grill gris needs to be replaced again to, pretty sure that the next one will be the 3rd replacement also.

    as with other comments…it seems that 3-5 years is about all your getting out of a grill

BACKYARD BARBEQUE SAFETY TIPS

It's the weekend, and you're basking in the sun on your patio. In one hand, you're holding a cool drink; in the other a spatula. A couple of juicy steaks are sizzling on the grill, and you're savoring the smell of the flavorful smoke as it drifts past your nose. The last thing on your mind is safety, right?

It shouldn't be. According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, warm-weather activities such as hosting a barbeque led to product-related injuries for more than 3.7 million people in 2002.

But here's the good news. With just a few simple, precautionary steps, you'll be well on your way to ensuring a safe cookout, every time. After all, what's more important than having the peace of mind to enjoy the real fun at any barbeque: the food, family, and friends?

Safety for Gas Grills

Since the Clean Air Act of 1990, propane has been a popular fuel source for many households' especially for gas-powered barbeque grills. Propane tanks burn more cleanly, are less expensive, and cook faster than other fuel sources.

As with any fuel source, though, itís important to take precautions when operating your propane tanks and gas grills. Follow these eight tips and keep safety first during your next cookout.

Inspect the cylinder of your propane tank for bulges, dents, gouges, corrosion, leaks, or evidence of extreme rusting. Also, examine the hoses on your grill for brittleness, leaks, holes, cracks, or sharp bends. If you find any of these problems, itís time to replace the equipment.

Be sure to keep propane tanks upright, and move gas hoses away from dripping grease and hot surfaces.

Never use cigarettes, lighters, or matches near your gas grill, whether it's in use or not. You can't be sure that there's not a slight gas leak somewhere in the unit, so it's always better to be safe than sorry.

Propane tanks require sophisticated valve equipment to keep them safe for use with grills. Never try to remove the valve from your propane tank, because youíll risk an explosion. In addition, always close the tank valve when youíre finished using it.

Never bring your propane tank indoors, and never store spare gas containers under or near your grill. Don't store other flammable liquids, such as gasoline, near propane tanks. Keep your barbeque covered when it's not in use to prevent hazardous situations.

If you must transport your propane tank for any purpose, be sure you choose a relatively cool day. Keeping containers or any other grill parts that are under pressure in a hot car will cause an increase in the pressure of the gas, which could cause an explosion.

Never dispose of your propane tank by throwing it in the trash. Check to see if there are municipal programs for collection in your area. If your grill uses a disposable tank, take care to use up all the residual gas before discarding it.

Safety for Charcoal Grills

Even though you don't have to be concerned about propane gas leaks with charcoal grills, you do need take precautions against another kind of gas; carbon monoxide. Because charcoal produces carbon monoxide, which is highly toxic, you should never burn your charcoal grill inside your home, a tent, a vehicle, or any other enclosed area.

Keep the following four safety tips in mind when using your charcoal grills:

1. Operate charcoal grills only outdoors, never inside an enclosed area. Even if you've finished grilling, and you assume all the coals are extinguished, they're still producing carbon monoxide, so keep your charcoal grills outside at all times.

2. Don't wear loose clothing, especially long sleeves, while grilling.

3. Charcoal grills tend to flare up, so keep a fire extinguisher handy.

4. Use charcoal lighter fluid to light new coals only; don't use it on coals that are already lit.

Safe Cooking: How to Reduce Cancer Risks When You Grill

Did you know that grilling meat increases the production of compounds that are linked to a greater risk of certain cancers? According to an article published by the American Institute for Cancer Research (AICR), researchers have found evidence of heterocyclic amines (HCAs) in meats that are cooked on outdoor grills.

The good news is that there are plenty of things you can do to reduce that risk. Follow these five tips to cook great barbeque safely and deliciously.

1. Marinate meats for at least 12 hours. Evidence suggests that this simple step can reduce the amount of HCAs that are formed when grilling by as much as 99 percent.

2. Try kabobs instead of large pieces of meat, such as steaks. The less time the meat spends on the grill, the better. Kabobs have short cooking times because meat is cut into small, bite-size pieces. If you must cook large portions, pre-cook the meat by baking it, and then grill for a few minutes at the end of the cooking process for added flavor
.
3. Grill meat at low temperatures, and flip frequently to avoid charring.

4. Remove burnt or blackened parts of meat before eating.

5. Trim the fat from your meat before grilling to avoid drips, which cause flare-ups and charring.

Disgruntled customers used to have little recourse against poor service and broken promises.

But as angry clients increasingly turn to the Internet to settle scores, companies, independent retailers and everyday wrongdoers are learning that consumers can have the last word -- and often the last laugh. The Web has turned into a place where shame and humiliation are sometimes the strongest weapons in fighting scams and unfairness.

AOL got burned last week, for example, when an exasperated customer recorded and broadcast online a service representative's emphatic reluctance to cancel his service. Comcast Corp. fired a technician after a videotape surfaced purporting to show him asleep on a customer's couch. The clip became popular on Web sites such as amateur video site YouTube. People are also using the Internet to retaliate against common thieves and discourtesies. A popular blog on Friday posted voice mails from a man demanding that his date pay him back for half the dinner check after the romance fizzled. In June, a New York man posted pictures online of a girl who allegedly refused to return his friend's T-Mobile Sidekick that had been taken from a taxicab. The Web site became popular among other victims of cellphone theft, and it led to the girl's arrest. And there also was the South Korean woman who was humiliated last year when she didn't clean up the mess her dog left in the subway after a fellow train rider posted a photo of the incident on a popular Web site.

"There's no question that publicly shaming someone, whether it is a politician or a company, is the best way not only to get their attention but to change their behavior," said Jeff Chester, executive director for the District-based consumer-advocacy group Center for Digital Democracy. "People are going to be very sensitive to it."

Online disgrace creates so much buzz on blogs and in the media that companies are beginning to realize the devastating public relations effects brought on by these grass-roots expos?s, said Gemma Puglisi, assistant professor of communications at American University.

"This has been a wake-up call for these companies," she said. "The day where you send a little letter to the CEO is over. In the age of technology, you have to be even more careful of how you treat your customers because you don't know where they're going to go. Now everything's out in the open."

The Internet has long been a forum for rants about unsatisfactory service and faulty products. Just about every major retailer has a consumer-created counter-site that lists complaints, and dozens of all-purpose sites allow people to share their opinions on everything from apartment complexes to car dealers.

"I think the inherent nature of the Internet brings out the inner complainer in us," said Joe Ridout, a spokesman for Consumer Action, an advocacy group in San Francisco. "To get back at people who are out to steal or swindle, shaming may be a reasonable response."

There are so many anti-company sites that some customer service representatives are fighting back by starting their own sites to complain about annoying customers.

Such sites are also useful in showing a company's true character, Ridout said.

"Anything that produces more information, anything that penetrates this slickly manicured image, is useful information," he said.

The rise of user-generated commercials gives angry consumers yet another opportunity to get their message on the Internet. In March, Chevrolet added a feature on its Web site that allowed visitors to piece together images and text to create an ad for its Tahoe sport-utility vehicle. But anti-SUV activists used the site to make a negative commercial condemning the vehicle for harming the environment.

Such watchdog-type content has "become invaluable as a way of checking on firms, as well as countering them," Chester said.

But even as these public-shaming campaigns continue to crop up, the well-oiled marketing machines of the targeted companies will overcome the negative publicity in the long run, he said.

"As the Internet becomes more ad-supported, it's questionable if consumers and users will have any real clout," he said. "Will a Fortune 500 company hear the sound of one angry blogger in the digital forest?"
