Wind Chimes

There’s nothing more peaceful than sitting outside on a warm summer evening and listening to the quiet, soothing tones of wind chimes drift across the air. They are lovely to hear and the sound of soft music is balm for the soul.

Wind chimes are as lovely to watch as they are to listen to and today there are a large variety of styles and materials to choose from. Wind chimes are made of bamboo, metal, stained glass and wood. Metal chimes include those made of brass, copper or pewter. The most unique set of metal wind chimes that I’ve ever seen were made of an enamel baby’s cup and eating utensils. The sound was exquisite.

Other metal chimes are made of bells that tinkle when a soft breeze moves them slightly. Some chimes are made of metal tubing or discs that are shaped like animals, amphibians or flowers. Large metal chimes have deeper tones, while smaller chimes play a soft melody.

When shopping for wind chimes determine if you want a classic, rustic or whimsical look. Chimes are available in a wide variety of styles and shapes. They can reflect a personal interest or you may choose something more traditional. Classic wind chimes are great for an arbor or gazebo area that is used for meditation or prayer. Often these chimes have an international look and are made of bamboo or metal pipes. Bamboo chimes give a soft, gentle music and are often less expensive than other types of wind chimes. They are the perfect accessory for a gardener who loves the simple things in life and look great when hung from a balcony, verandah fascia or a branch of a small tree.

Use wind chimes to enhance the Chi in your house

Wind chimes are more and more popular these days. It makes beautiful sound with breeze and add life to a quite household. Thanks to the artists and gift manufactures, you can find almost any kind of wind chimes anywhere. It is preferred to select wind chimes made of hollow tubes. This brings an uplift influence of Chi.
There are many ways of placing wind chimes in a house hold. You can place it by the door or window to take advantage of breeze. You can also place it the relatively darker section of the house to enhance the Chi. You can even  specifically select the wind chimes for the element it represents and place it strategically at certain locations. BTW, it is not recommended to place wind chimes at work even if you have your own office. This is not because of FengShui but many believe it does not look very professional.

If you want to take full advantage of the wind chimes, there are two factors you may want to consider. They are material and number of rods.
The wind chimes made of brass or steel represents metal element. The preferred number of rods for such a wind chime is six or seven.
The wind chimes made of bamboo represents wood element. The preferred number of rods for a bamboo chime is three or four.

Wind chime

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.

Wind chimes or Aeolian chimes are often hollow or solid metal or wooden tubes which are usually hung outside of a building and are intended to be played by the wind, which causes the chimes to strike each other or a metal, wood, or rubber ball which may be hung in the center.

Wind chimes produce inharmonic (as opposed to harmonic) spectra, although if they are hung at about 1/5th of their length (22.4%) the higher partials are dampened and the fundamental is brought out. This is common practice in high quality wind chimes, which are also usually hung so the center ball strikes the center of the wind chime's length. Frequency is determined by the length, width, thickness, and material. There are formulas that help predict the proper length to achieve a particular note, though a bit of fine tuning is often needed. Wind chimes are thought to be good luck in Africa.

Chimes are also made of materials other than metal or wooden tubes or rods. Many people accept bamboo, stones, horseshoes, mechanics tools, pvc pipe, glass, seashells, old silverware, etc. as chimes. The sounds these make are not tunable to specific notes and range from pleasant tinkling to dull thuds. The feeling seems to be that if it is moved by the wind and makes a noise, it is a wind chime.

n some areas of the world chimes are used to predict the weather changes. For instance if the wind comes from the north or north west it may mean a storm or colder weather is on its way. If a chime is positioned on the north side of the house so only a north wind will move it, it can alert the inhabitants to a weather change. A south wind could mean milder temperatures are on their way, so the chime is mounted on the south side.

The Secret World of the Wind Chimer
One would never be able to pick them out from a crowd. They don’t belong to clubs or wear t-shirts with insignias and they don’t have secret handshakes. They are teachers, lawyers, doctors and accountants and they walk among us without detection. They are Wind Chimers and they aren’t even aware of it!

A Wind Chimer knows which wind chimes make the prettiest music and knows them by brand names. A Wind Chimer knows the name of the chime pictured here. If you know it then you are a Wind Chimer too.

There are hundreds of styles of wind chimes manufactured from almost every type of material known to man — metal, plastic, rock, shells, bamboo, coconut, paper, etc. Styles range from tubular bells to porcelain figures.

History of the Wind Chime

Perhaps the root of the wind chime lies in ancient China where an instrument called a “chime” was used to create music. The chime was a collection of different sized bells, each with a different tone. It was fitting, then, that the earliest use of elaborate wind chimes was in Asia to decorate temples and pagodas. Asians began decorating their homes with wind chimes and eventually the use of wind chimes spread to other parts of the world. It’s believed to have been introduced into the western world through the teachings of Feng Shui.

The Importance of Wind Chimes in Feng Shui

Wind chimes are believed to have healing powers and to enhance the mind, spirit and body of the whole person. Tubular wind chimes, in particular, are said to enhance the Chi of a home. The number of tubes and the material of the wind chime are very important to Feng Shui beliefs.

Steel and brass tubes represent the metal element and are best suited for placement in north, northwest or west corners. The number of tubes on the chime will change the purpose. 6 or 8 tubes will give you luck but if you wish to avoid bad luck you should use a chime with only 5 tubes.

Bamboo and coconut wind chimes represent the wood element and should be placed in the southern corner to bring fame and the east or southeast to create luck. If you place metal chimes in the south corner (wood element) you are asking for trouble because metal destroys wood. The preferred number of bamboo rods is 3 or 4.

Signs of a QUALITY Metal Wind Chime
One can easily distinguish between a low and high quality chime by comparing the sounds. There is no comparison. One can even hear the difference in mid to high quality without any special musical background. There is a trick, however, to knowing what’s highest quality and not without hearing the chime at all. If the strings that hold the tubes are thread through each side of the tube it interferes with the music of the wind chime. A single string running down the middle of the tube is a sure signal that it is a quality chime. The picture at the top of this page shows a high quality wind chime. The picture to the left shows a mid-quality wind chime and the difference is how the tubes are strung.

Mid and high quality chimes are hand-tuned, the tubes are thick and one can play a tune on those of highest quality by striking each tube like the keys on a piano. Deepest tones come from the largest tubes and highest tones come from the shortest.

Selecting the Best Quality Wind Chimes.

Quality is a function of the materials by which the wind chimes were constructed, and the skill of the craftsman assembling the individual parts into the finished set. By far, the best sounding wind chimes are made by hand, in the United States. Founded by a musician 1982, Our wind chimes produce harmonically tuned tempered aluminum chimes with a unique suspension system. History of wind chimes
Although the wind chime has existed from prehistoric times in many cultures, it received its most elegant and prolific development in east and south Asia, from Bali to Tibet and Japan, where it was often elaborately decorated, cast, or carved and was hung from the eaves of sacred structures. Buddhists especially made use of wind chimes and wind bells, attaching them profusely by the hundreds or even thousands to the eaves of temples, shrines, and pagodas, causing during breezy moments an almost overwhelming auspicious sensation of sound.

In China and Japan they became a decorative art in private homes as well as on sacred structures, and in the 19th and 20th centuries their popular use spread more widely among Western countries.  Today, we are bridging the worlds of ancient and modern times, the wisdom of the East is spreading to the West and being met with enthusiasm and intrigue.

Healing effects of wind chimes
Tones have a healing effect on our bodies, calm our minds and awaken our spirits.  The resonance and vibration of sound releases stress and emotional blockages in the body and calms the mind. The calming of mind expands conscious awareness and connection with spirit. Wind chimes thereby help enhance the mind/body/spirit connection bringing us a sense of peace and well being.
